Hibiki Guitar Stylings

Ryu Yokoo was born in Osaka City, Japan and started playing guitar as a young child. Soon he and his friends were singing songs of the Beatles and other groups, before even understanding the English lyrics.

While still living in Japan, Ryu graduated from university with a Bachelor’s Degree in Education, majoring in English Language and Literature. He made several trips to Canada before settling permanently in 2000. He first lived in Ottawa, Ontario and Dartmouth, Nova Scotia before eventually moving to Edmonton.

Ryu’s love of music continued, and he was soon enrolled in MacEwan University’s Music Program, graduating with honours from the performance major. Over the next few years he worked at various local music schools before establishing his own studio, teaching guitar, bass, ukulele and harmonica. He takes a limited number of students every year, and beginners are welcome.

Any location is a welcome venue for Ryu to share his music. He recently performed solo concerts at The Muttart Conservatory and the University of Alberta Botanic Garden. As well, he brings his talents to open mic events at lounges, house concerts and farmers markets. He has also performed at Edmonton Japanese Canadian Association events and appeared in a film entitled Reiko’s Hina Dolls. Recent concerts include at Café Lavi, Table Top Café, the Summer Solstice Celebration on 124 Street, and other venues.

Ryu recently began hosting the Saturday Night Open Stage at The Carrot, located at 9351-118 Avenue. Along with co-host Heather Andrews Miller, he welcomes everyone to participate, including musicians, poets, actors, comedians and what-have-you. Sign up is at 6:30 and the excitement begins at 7:00 and goes to 9:30. Be sure to get fresh home made soup and sandwiches and other freshly bakes goods from The Carrot’s menu.

He recently began performing every Thursday night at the classy L1 Lounge, located at West Edmonton Mall in the Fantasyland Hotel. Music starts at 8:00 and goes to 11:00. Enjoy a conversation with friends over a tasty item from L1’s extensive food and beverage menu or enjoy a date night with that special person.

Ryu would be pleased to provide background music or perform at weddings, family reunions, corporate events, house concerts, and other activities. Nothing makes him happier than sharing his vast selection of melodies with fellow music lovers!
